CHAPLET OF THE HOLY FACE
The purpose of the Chaplet of the Holy Face is to honor the Five Wounds of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and to ask of God the triumph of His Holy Church. This Chaplet especially renders homage to the Face of Our Divine Savior and the wounds inflicted upon that Sacred Countenance during His bitter Passion. The devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus makes reparation especially for blasphemies and irreverences against the Holy Name of God and the Profanation of Sundays.
This chaplet was composed by Sister Mary of St. Peter, a Carmelite Nun of Tours, France, following special revelations of Our Lord to her.
St. Athanasius relates that the devils, on being asked what verse in the whole Scripture they feared the most, replied: “That with which the sixty-seventh psalm commences: ‘Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered. Let them that hate Him flee from before His Face.’ “They added that this always compelled them to take flight.
- The Cross reminds us of the mystery of our Redemption.
- The 33 beads represent the years of Our Lord’s mortal life on earth.
- The first 30 beads are for His hidden life. These are divided into
5 groups of 6 beads to honor His 5 senses and to make reparation for
all that He suffered through them in His Passion.
- The 3 beads near the Cross and medal represent the public years of
Our Lord’s life.
- The “Glory be to the Father...” is recited 7 times in honor of the 7 last
words of Jesus upon the Cross, and the 7 dolors of the Immaculate
How to recite the chaplet
Make the Sign of the Cross with the Crucifix and say:
O God, come to my assistance, Lord make haste to help me!
Glory be to the Father...
On the 33 beads arranged in 5 groups of 6 beads and 1 group of 3 beads, say:
Let God arise and let His enemies be scattered, and let them that hate Him flee from before His Face!
On the 6 single beads, which precede and follow each of the 5 groups, say: My Jesus, mercy! Glory be to the Father...
The final group (3 beads) near the Cross and medal is said last.
The Chaplet is concluded by saying on the medal:
God, our Protector, look down upon us and cast Thine eyes upon the Face of Thy Christ!
Prayer for the Sanctification of Sundays & Holy Days
Most glorious Patriarch St. Joseph, obtain from our Lord Jesus Christ His most plentiful blessings upon all those who keep Sundays and Holy Days holy; and grant that those who profane them may realize, while there is yet time, how great is the evil they commit and the punishment they draw upon themselves both in this present life and in the life to come; and grant that they may be speedily converted.
O most faithful St. Joseph, who in thy early life was ever faithful in keeping the law of God, grant that the day may soon come, when all Christian people shall refrain from those works that are forbidden on Sundays and Holy Days, devote themselves earnestly to the salvation of their souls and give glory to God: Who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen. (composed by Pius X)
THE GOLDEN ARROW
(Dictated by Our Lord to Sister Mary of St. Peter)
May the most holy, most sacred, most adorable, most incomprehensible and unutterable Name of God be always praised, blessed, loved, adored and glorified, in Heaven, on earth, and under the earth, by all the creatures of God, and by the Sacred Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Amen.
(After receiving this prayer, Sister Mary of St. Peter was given a vision in which she saw the Sacred Heart of Jesus delightfully wounded by this “Golden Arrow” , as torrents of graces streamed from It for the conversion of sinners.)
Aspiration to the Eternal Father to be recited frequently
during the day
Eternal Father, I offer Thee the adorable Face of Thy Beloved Son for the honor and glory of Thy Name, for the conversion of sinners and the salvation of the dying.
“Oh Jesus, through the merits of Thy Holy Face, have pity on us, and on the whole world.” (Three times)
Offering of Our Lord’s Holy Face to God the Father
Eternal Father, turn away Thy angry gaze from our guilty people whose face has become unsightly in Thine eyes. Look instead upon the Face of Thy Beloved Son, for this is the Face of Him in Whom Thou art well pleased. We now offer Thee this Holy Face, covered with shame and disfigured by bloody bruises, in reparation for the crimes of our age, in order to appease Thy anger justly provoked against us. Because Thy Divine Son, our Redeemer, has taken upon His Head all the sins of His members, that they might be spared, we now beg of Thee, Eternal Father, to grant us mercy. Amen.
Prayer to the Blessed Mother
for the Conversion of Sinners and Enemies of Christ’s Church
We fly to thy patronage, O holy Mother of God. Do thou receive us , O our Mother and our Queen. Beg of thy Son, the Lover and Redeemer of souls, through the merits of the sufferings He endured on His adorable Face to accomplish His designs of mercy for all poor sinners, and in particular for the enemies of His Church; that all peoples may praise Him and all generations call thee blessed. Thou art the channel of pardon, thou art the Mother of Grace, thou art the hope of the world; hear us who cry to thee.
Eternal Father, we offer Thee the Holy Face of Jesus for the intentions of Mary Immaculate!
